A Grounding Class is a dynamic stretch, movement and expression class, based on the field of Bioenergetics. It could be considered dynamic yoga – where yoga tends to direct attention inwards into the body through breathing and stretching with awareness, Grounding directs the attention outwards from the body through breathing, expression and movement with awareness. The goal is to ‘free the channel’ and to allow our bodies to feel their full aliveness and expression:
- Calms an overactive mind
- Greater sense of peace
- Reduced mental and emotional stress
- Increased energy levels
- Reduced habitual and chronic muscular tension
- Great physical workout
- Improved ability to be present
What do you mean by Grounded?
Being Grounded is another way of saying that you are IN YOUR BODY.
There is ‘more of you’ here and now, because your mind isn’t relentlessly worrying about the future or the past. You have your ‘feet on the ground’ and are fully present with your loved ones, work colleagues, family and friends. Being grounded allows a much clearer perception of reality as you are less defended, more stable, more open and better able to relate to the world as it is.
What is being Ungrounded like?
Ungrounded means the loss of connection to your body, to be LOST IN THOUGHTS and disconnected from experiencing life ‘in the moment’.
Being “Ungrounded” can lead to increased levels of psychological distress, muscular tension, and dissociation with the body’s wisdom and signals. It’s very symptomatic of modern life, with a heavy focus on mental activity and ALWAYS BEING ON in a 24/7 world.
What happens in a class?
We follow 4 main phases: Stretch – Charge – Discharge – Integration.
What is Bioenergetics?
Bioenergetics is a form of body-psychotherapy based on the work of Alexander Lowen, during which breathing techniques, special physical exercises, positions and bodily contact are used in order to undo ‘energy blocks’ and defensive mechanisms which crystallise over time on a physical, psychological and emotional level. Grounding is an essential key to this work:
“Bioenergetics rests on the simple proposition that each person is their body. No person exists apart from the living body in which you exist and through which you express yourself and relate to the world around. If you are your body and your body is you then it expresses who you are. It is your way of being in the world. The more alive your body is, the more present you are in the world.
When a body loses some of its aliveness, as when you are exhausted or ill, for example, you tend to withdraw. You may even sense the world at a distance or see it as through a haze. On the other hand, there are days when you are radiantly alive and the world about you seems brighter, closer, more real. We all would like to be and feel more alive, and Bioenergetics can help us toward the achievement of this goal.”
- Dr Alexander Lowen
Bioenergetics can help anyone to have deeper contact with themselves and fully and consciously experience the essential flows of energy in the body. The result of bioenergetics, which happens almost naturally, allows you to open yourself up to external factors, becoming more sensitive and comprehensive, but also more direct in relationships with other people.
The importance of having our own ‘centre’ in the lower abdomen is recognised by the majority of Eastern disciplines. The Japanese use the word hara, which means abdomen, and refers to the quality of a person in how much they are centred and balanced in that zone, both physically and psychologically.
The disciplines of Zen and QiGong focus explicitly on developing this centre, whilst many modern western practices like Postural Integration, Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique have also drawn from this tradition of developing or centering in this area of the body.
